Introduction

React Native is a popular framework for building mobile applications using JavaScript and React. It allows developers to write mobile applications that can run on both iOS and Android platforms while sharing a significant portion of the codebase between them.

Introduction to React Native​

React Native was developed by Facebook and was first released in 2015. It's based on React, a JavaScript library for building user interfaces, and allows developers to use React's declarative approach to define UI components for mobile applications.

Key features of React Native include:

  1. Cross-platform Development: With React Native, you can write code once and deploy it on both iOS and Android platforms. This is made possible through the use of native components that map directly to the corresponding native UI elements.

  2. Native Performance: React Native doesn't use web views for rendering the UI. Instead, it uses native components which results in a more responsive and smoother experience compared to hybrid frameworks.

  3. Code Reusability: A significant portion of the codebase can be shared between iOS and Android versions of the app, reducing development time and effort.

  4. Large Community and Ecosystem: React Native has a large and active community, which contributes to its ecosystem with libraries, tools, and resources.

How React Native Works​

  1. Components: React Native applications are built using React components. These components are small, reusable building blocks that define how a part of the UI should appear and behave. React Native provides a set of core components like View, Text, Image, etc., which are then compiled into native components.

  2. JSX: JSX (JavaScript XML) is used to write React Native components. It allows developers to write HTML-like syntax directly in JavaScript, making it easier to visualize the UI structure.

  3. Bridge: React Native uses a bridge to communicate between JavaScript code and native code. JavaScript runs in a separate thread (the JavaScript thread) from the native UI thread. The bridge handles communication and passes instructions to the native components.

  4. Native Modules: For functionality not covered by React Native's core components, developers can write native modules in Java (for Android) or Objective-C / Swift (for iOS). These native modules can then be accessed from JavaScript code, allowing developers to leverage device-specific APIs and functionalities.

  5. Styling: Styling in React Native is done using JavaScript. It uses a subset of CSS properties and provides a StyleSheet API to define styles in a way that optimizes performance on mobile devices.

  6. Debugging: React Native applications can be debugged using tools like Chrome Developer Tools for JavaScript debugging and Xcode / Android Studio for native code debugging.

Main Concepts​

  • Components and Props: Components are the UI building blocks, and props (short for properties) are used to pass data from parent to child components.

  • State Management: React Native uses state to manage component data and re-render components when the state changes. State can be updated using setState() method.

  • Lifecycle Methods: React Native components have lifecycle methods (componentDidMount, componentWillUnmount, etc.) that allow developers to execute code at specific stages of a component's life.

  • Navigation: React Navigation is a popular library for handling navigation in React Native apps. It provides an API to manage navigation state and navigate between screens.

  • Redux (Optional): Redux is commonly used for state management in larger React Native applications. It provides a centralized store to manage application state and helps in managing data flow across components.

React Native continues to evolve with updates and improvements from the community and core contributors. It's a versatile framework that enables developers to build powerful mobile applications with a rich user experience using familiar web development techniques.
